It's a challenging time to be an NFL running back seeking a new contract. Franchises across the league have devalued the position over the last handful of seasons, leaving talented players wondering the fate of the once glamorous position.

Former Alabama running back Josh Jacobs is no different. The 2022 NFL rushing leader saw the NFL franchise tag deadline come and go on Monday afternoon without agreeing to a new long-term contract with the Las Vegas Raiders.

Jacobs, who was placed under the franchise tag on March 25, publicly stated he would not participate in Raiders training camp without a new contract. Now, owner Mark Davis and general manager Dave Zeigler put the two-time Pro Bowler to the test.

The franchise tag is worth $10.091 million for running backs in 2023, making Jacobs the seventh-highest paid running back for the coming season, but leaving him without long-term security in case of injury.

He is not subject to financial penalties for failing to appear with the Raiders in training camp and offseason activities because he refused to sign the tag. However, missing games will result in a reduction of the $10 million.

Jacobs joins fellow running backs Saquon Barkley and Tony Pollard as tailbacks who were placed on the franchise tag this offseason. All three players were unsuccessful in negotiating long-term agreements, but only Pollard signed with his team, the Dallas Cowboys, to beat the deadline.
