Report: Former Alabama Standout Josh Jacobs Expected to Sign with Packers
Former Alabama football standout Josh Jacobs is signing a 4-year, $48 million contract with the Green Bay Packers after spending the first five seasons of his career with the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero.
This signing stems from Jacobs not being extended nor being franchise-tagged by the Raiders, which made him an unrestricted free agent.
Jacobs, who often split carries at Alabama but broke out during the 2018 SEC Championship and CFP semifinal game vs. Oklahoma, earned All-Pro honors in 2022 after finishing as the league's rushing leader. However, in 13 games this past season, he logged a career-low 3.5 yards per attempt. The two-time Pro Bowler turned 26-years-old on Feb. 11.
About an hour after Jacobs was signed, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the Packers informed starting running back Aaron Jones that he is being released. He had one year remaining on his contract, but now he'll become a free agent.
Jacobs, 26, gets a fresh start on the youngest team in the league. Green Bay made it to the Divisional round of this past season and has an extremely promising future ahead.
Jacobs has been linked with former Alabama standout and current Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry since the offseason started, as they were both free agents and not extended by their respective teams. All signs pointed to the 2015 Heisman Trophy winner finding a new team for the 2024 season, and Tennessee's signing of Dallas Cowboys running back Tony Pollard to pair with young backup Tyjae Spears on Monday further proved that claim.
