Alabama Basketball Lands Fourth Transfer in West Virginia's Mohamed Wague
Alabama head coach Nate Oats had his work cut out for him when he lost three major frontcourt players from last year's Sweet Sixteen team to either graduation or the NBA.
Oats answered the bell, most recently adding West Virginia transfer Mohamed Wague for even more reinforcement down low.
Wague, a 6-foot-10, 225-pound forward, was a late addition to the transfer portal, entering after former West Virginis head coach Bob Huggins' resignation. He began his collegiate career at Harcum College in Pennsylvania, where he was named a Junior College All-American before transferring to the Mountaineers last season.
As a sophomore, Wague appeared in 28 games albeit sparingly, averaging just 10 minutes per game. In his limited time, he showed flashes of potential with his tremendous length and athleticism as a rim runner and a rim protector.
He scored just four points per game in his role, but converted on 80 percent of his shot attempts at the rim. He is a strong rebounder on both ends of the floor, and has strong hands to catch inside passes.
Wague is somewhat of a raw talent that still needs some polishing on his game, but can provide excellent relief behind Nick Pringle and Grant Nelson on the interior, especially in situations of foul trouble.
Wague is the fourth member of one of the best transfer classes in the country, joining fellow big man Nelson, as well as guards Aaron Estrada and Latrell Wrightsell Jr.
In addition to the 4-man transfer class, Oats is also bringing in a 4-man recruiting class that ranks in the top-15 nationally.
Oats now has one open scholarship remaining, and will likely pursue a guard to fill the hole left by the departure of Jahvon Quinerly to the transfer portal.
