Elite Forward Jarin Stevenson Commits to Alabama Basketball, Reclassifies to 2023
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The 2023-24 iteration of Alabama basketball is becoming clearer by the day.
In one huge, and potentially final move, head coach Nate Oats has picked up a late commitment from Jarin Stevenson, who has also chosen to reclassify to the 2023 class and enroll at Alabama this season.
Originally a member of the Class of 2024, Stevenson was rated either a high 4- or 5-star prospect by all recruiting services. The Crimson Tide won his pledge over the likes of Virginia and his hometown school of North Carolina, where his mother played college basketball.
Stevenson is from Pittsboro, North Carolina, right outside of Chapel Hill. Playing for Seaforth High School as a junior last season, he averaged just under 22 points and 12 rebounds per game, earning him North Carolina Gatorade Player of the Year honors as a junior.
At 6-foot-10 and 200 pounds, Stevenson provides even more frontcourt depth next to Nick Pringle and expected addition Grant Nelson. He plays with a high motor and his athleticism gives him high versatility on both ends. He can score in a variety of ways, whether it be on the low block, rim running, or with a respectable outside shot.
Stevenson is a strong defender and shot blocker, which will make him immensely valuable to Oats after losing his best two interior defenders to the NBA Draft, Charles Bediako and Noah Clowney.
With the late addition of Stevenson and expected commitment of Nelson, Alabama has just one remaining scholarship available for the 2023-24 team. Last season, the Crimson Tide left its final spot open, allowing for freshman Davin Cosby to enroll early and take a redshirt year. It wouldn't be surprising to see that spot left open again, unless an enticing option becomes available.
