Former Alabama LB Darren Mustin on The Joe Gaither Show | Episode 71: Aug. 30, 2023

What inspires someone to leave a Division 1 football scholarship to walk-on somewhere else?
In this story:

The Alabama Crimson Tide football team is three days away from kicking off its season against the MTSU Blue Raiders. "The Joe Gaither Show on BamaCentral" welcomes former Alabama and MTSU linebacker Darren Mustin into the program to talk about leaving Murfreesboro and heading to Tuscaloosa to live out his football dreams.

Mustin was at The Capstone with DeMeco Ryans and Rolando McClain but held his own going from a walk-on to earning a scholarship to being named team captain in Nick Saban's first season.

How did Saban and then defensive coordinator Kevin Steele change the culture and set the foundation for the success the Tide has enjoyed during the last decade and a half?

Mustin describes his experience playing for the crimson cultural icon that was Joe Kines and what Kines told him that cemented the belief he had in himself.

The 2007 Bear Bryant Award winner told the program about his family and faith as he grew up with 13 brothers and sisters, the majority of which were adopted.

Check out the episode to hear about the first meeting he had with Steele, how coach Saban treated the Independence Bowl trip in his first season and how Mustin left his mark on the Army University Black Knights football program.
