KJ Jefferson's Biggest Job in Razorbacks' New Offense

It may move slower, but execution may not be biggest learning curve he faces
In this story:

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Arkansas quarterback KJ Jefferson may be the "bubble wrap" player this year. That's not my original phrase, but after  listening to Nashville Sports Radio's Bill King on Halftime on ESPN Arkansas last week, it sounded like the perfect one.

What that phrase means, simply, is they can't lose him and expect to win an awful lot of games. For a quarterback who hasn't avoided injury through two full seasons as the No. 1 signal caller, it's a question everyone has at least in the back of their minds.

With new offensive coordinator, the hope is they can keep Jefferson upright and playing at 100% for an entire season. Since most of his injuries have come after he's moved out of the pocket, you assume he's got the point by now.

"This system is very pro style," Jefferson said at SEC Media Days in Nashville earlier this week. "It's a lot slower than how we been in the previous years. It's a lot on the quarterback. I have a lot more freedom to do different things, audible different plays, stuff like that."

Hopefully, it gives Jefferson a chance to answer questions about decision-making that some folks have raised. There's also technical questions and he's mentioned working on that in the off-season, both with Enos and going out to California to work on his fundamentals. It's Enos' main job to handle the decision-making process.

None that means much, though, if he's in street clothes on the sideline. King was referring to wrapping the Hogs' quarterback in that stuff a lot of us can spend too much time popping and making noise with they put in shipping containers to protect what's being sent.

All of these favorable preseason projections from fans and media is based on the idea that multiple questions have very favorable answers. Maybe the biggest answer would be Jefferson staying completely healthy. That means fully mobile on the field for a full 12 games. It's a big part of why he came back to the team for his fifth season. He's trying to make it the first to play a complete schedule healthy.
