Juggling on Hogs' Offensive Line May Keep Going for Awhile

Not only position coaches trying to figure out personnel moves in spring

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — There seems to be a lot of tryouts going on with the Arkansas offense this year.

Offensive line coach Cody Kennedy is juggling players at various positions along the front with a healthy dose of advice from head coach Sam Pittman, who spent several decades trying to puzzle together offensive lines for national championship contenders.

The head Hog once moved Andrew Thomas to three positions while he was at Georgia in 2017.

"Kirby (Smart) said, ‘Pittman, it better work,’" Pittman said in his press conference Tuesday. "He went out there, we went to the national championship game and he was the fourth pick in the draft. Those things are fun to find out about your kids."

Pittman admitted he enjoys moving players around to find the right position. The current player he's experimenting with is sophomore Patrick Kutas who is working at right tackle for now.

"I really believe we’ll find out that Kutas can play tackle," Pittman said. "We got exploited a little bit on the edge during the scrimmage, so we need a little help out there. We need to get better."

The last couple of years the line was pretty settled with very little competition for playing time among one of the more solid positions on the team.

That's different this year. The entire team is a system of moving parts at the moment, not just in the line, but also wide receiver and tight end.

No one has stepped to the front to be the go-to guy at either spot.

Still, putting together the puzzle is a part of the job Pittman loves.

"I’m having a blast doing it and I have no reason to believe that we won’t have a really good offensive line again," Pittman said. "We’ve just got to make sure we’ve got the right five out there at the right positions and I am having fun doing it."
