Razorbacks Will Get Longhorns in Fayetteville Once Again

At least Alabama isn't on the 2024 schedule, released Wednesday evening

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Now we at least know who Arkansas is playing in 2024, and maybe the best thing is Alabama isn't on the schedule. Don't get too confident though, because there's no idea who's going to be any good. The SEC finally released the eight-game conference schedule Wednesday night.

It could be a murderous line-up or there could be some "gettable" games mixed in with another home game with the Texas Longhorns on the schedule. Don't get too cocky about that 2021 win for 2024 because it will mean absolutely nothing. Besides, with LSU, Ole Miss and Tennessee on the schedule also,  there will at least be some marquee names.

The Razorbacks will go on the road for games against Auburn, Mississippi State and Missouri. Presumably, one final game against Texas A&M at Arlington will wrap that contract before the games go home and home. Maybe the most surprising is the Oklahoma Sooners aren't on the schedule. That will have to wait at least a year.

With Texas and Oklahoma coming into the league starting in 2024, the SEC couldn't figure out whether to have nine conference games or eight, so they just stayed with eight and scrapped divisions. At least they got Alabama off the schedule, but the Hogs will still play Tennessee out of the old East and, of course, they are continuing to try to create a rivalry with Missouri that will probably be at the end of the year.

The Razorbacks will host LSU in the Battle for the Golden Boot, Ole Miss, Tennessee and Texas. That means the Longhorns will have travelled to Arkansas the past two times.

In a series dating back to 1906, the Longhorns and Hogs have only met in Fayetteville in consecutive games once in 1929 and 1932. They met annually from 1932-91 as members of the Southwest Conference, but have only played six times since 1991.

LSU and the Hogs will meet for the 70th time in 2024 and 33rd consecutive year since joining the league in 1992. The Rebels stay on the schedule for their 16th trip to Fayetteville in 2024. Tennessee makes a return trip to Razorback Stadium after playing in Fayetteville during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. The Hogs topped the Volunteers 24-13 in the last match-up between the once annual rivals.

Arkansas’ road games at Auburn and Mississippi State continue the annual series with both schools that started in 1992. The Razorbacks have managed memorable games with both teams over the years, although, as of this schedule announcement, the Hogs have played against either head coach at their respective programs.

The Razorbacks’ 2024 non-conference schedule kicks off in Little Rock at War Memorial for the second straight season with a game against UAPB on August 31. A trip to Oklahoma State the following week on Sept. 7 will be the first game between the Razorbacks and Cowboys since 1980 and the first match-up between the two schools in Stillwater since 1978 when Lou Holtz’s squad began the season ranked No. 2 in the nation. A game against UAB at Razorback Stadium on Sept. 14 and a November date against Louisiana Tech round out the non-con portion of the Hogs’ schedule.

The 2024 SEC opponents were determined based on two primary factors: traditional opponents and balance of schedule strength.

Balance of schedule strength was based on each school’s conference winning percentage since the SEC’s last expansion in 2012. The winning percentages for the performance of Oklahoma and Texas in the Big 12 since 2012 were included in determining 16 positions ranked by winning percentage.

Each school’s schedule in 2024 will include four opponents – two home and two away – whose winning percentage ranked among the top eight conference winning percentages since 2012. Also, each school’s 2024 schedule will include four opponents — two home and two away — whose winning percentages ranked among the second eight conference winning percentages since 2012.
