College football expert: 'I think you've got to go back to Robby Ashford'
Auburn has a problem at quarterback.
Michigan State transfer Payton Thorne has not impressed through four games as the Tigers' primary signal-caller, leading offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery to pull him out for Robby Ashford, last year's starter.
The rotation has been clunky, with no success and a clear lack of rhythm. It feels like a tale we've been reading about Auburn forever; they can't find a solid, consistent quarterback to lead the offense.
The issue reared its ugly head once again on the road in a 27-10 loss to Texas A&M.
Thorne finished the game 6-for-12 passing for 44 yards. Abysmal considering how many open receivers the Tigers had streaking downfield at times.
One college football expert believes the Payton Thorne experience should be over. If Auburn wants success, they've got to go back to starting Robby Ashford.
Jordan Rogers of the SEC Network joined The Next Round to talk about Auburn's quarterback situation.
"I think you've got to go back to Robby Ashford," Rogers said. "The Payton Thorne experience was he was going to be the guy because he was going to be more consistent in the passing game, and also do some things with his legs. That hasn't been the case. I mean 6-for-12 last week, you're pedestrian at best... he couldn't get the ball out of his hands, so I've think you've got to try anything, and I wouldn't be surprised if we see two or three guys again this week. But they've got to figure that out, cause it ain't working."
The Tigers take on the Georgia Bulldogs this Saturday, September 30th. Kickoff is at 2:30 pm CT and will be televised on CBS.
