Writer believes Auburn could gain new rivals with potential ACC additions to SEC
Half of the ACC wants out of the conference.
As it stands right now, the ACC's current members are under contract through 2036. However, the members of the league are trying to figure out if they can breakaway regardless.
Andrew Hughes of Fly War Eagle recently wrote about the "Magnificent 7" in the ACC (Clemson, FSU, Miami, North Carolina, NC State, Virginia and Virginia Tech), the seven schools that have met with lawyers examining the conference's grant-of-rights contract to determine just how unbreakable it is.
Hughes believes that the additions of Oklahoma and Texas to the SEC will prove to be beneficial to the Tigers in the future, and that bringing in Miami, North Carolina, Florida State and Clemson would do the same - boosting the local economy for Auburn and potentially creating new rivals for the Tigers.
"Particularly in Miami’s case, Tiger fans would have increased opportunities to add exciting travel plans to their calendar every year," Hughes wrote. "Hard Rock Stadium would be an AU home game if the Hurricanes ever hosted the orange and blue.
Hughes also believes that kicking Missouri out of the SEC and replacing them with Duke would make sense.
"In the case of North Carolina, the SEC would expand into another southern state. That development makes the Tar Heels one of the more valuable additions culturally and market share-wise. If you ask this writer, bumping Missouri to facilitate Duke — who, it should be noted, is not one of the schools included in the “Magnificent 7” looking to break up the ACC — and keeping the Tar Heels and Blue Devils in the same conference would be the best move the SEC can make."
