Baylor Drops Nail-Biter to Brazil in GLOBL JAM, 73-71
Baylor held onto a slim 71-70 lead with mere seconds remaining in regulation in game three of the GLOBL JAM on Thursday afternoon in Toronto before a clutch three gave Brazil a wild 73-71 come-from-behind win over the Bears.
Team USA had one more final opportunity to score with just 0.8 seconds remaining after officials failed to call what appeared to be an obvious foul on Baylor’s Keyonte George as he was hit on the arm and the ball sailed out of bounds.
After Brazil blocked George’s last-second desperation three to end the game following a team timeout, the Bears drop to 0-3 in pool play after back-to-back two-point losses in the tournament.
George led all scorers for the third consecutive contest, knocking down 14 points along with five rebounds and three assists.
Jalen Bridges and Josh Ojianwuna paced the Bears on the boards with seven rebounds apiece, and Jordan Turner was second on the team in scoring with 13 points while also garnering four rebounds and an assist.
Dale Bonner led Baylor in assists with six while also netting 12 points and six rebounds.
It was an all-around team effort for Baylor on Thursday afternoon in a nail-biting finish that unfortunately left the Bears without a win in the inaugural GLOBL JAM tournament.
Baylor led by as many as 11 points in the game, while Brazil’s biggest lead was five.
Overall, the United States shot 32.4 percent from the field (compared to 43.8 percent for Brazil), pulled down 44 rebounds (Brazil had 45), dished out 14 assists (18 for Brazil) and had 13 turnovers (18 for Brazil).
Team USA led 38-35 at halftime and the Bears were up 57-53 heading into the fourth period before Brazil outscored Baylor 20-14 in the final quarter to secure the comeback victory.
Despite the 0-3 record in pool play, the United States will get a shot at redemption in the semifinals as Baylor is slated to face top-seeded Canada on Saturday, July 9 at 8 p.m. Central Time on ESPN-Plus.
Regardless of what happens on Saturday, coach Scott Drew and the Baylor men’s basketball team can keep their heads held high as they have competed tremendously well in a preview performance for a Bears squad that should make quite a bit of noise this year in the Big 12.
