Sawyer Robertson brings four-star prowess and a Mike Leach mentality from Mississippi State to Baylor. But Robertson is a whole lot more than all of the superlatives. He's an AC/DC-loving, ribeye-eating, ukelele-playing ball of a southern drawl.

"Man, I'm just, I'm excited to be a Bear," Robertson said on Locked On Baylor this week. "I'm pumped up to be a Baylor Bear."

The transfer phenom joined the show to tackle questions both unique and existential, showcasing his class and thick southern accent throughout. Growing up in Lubbock, that's no surprise. And it's really no surprise how much Mike Leach meant to him.

"My earliest memories are of him at Texas Tech, you know, Graham Harrell, Michael Crabtree, all those guys," Robertson said. "I was very fortunate to be able to be recruited by him and to be able to play for him cause that was a kind of a dream for me."

Leach, one of college football's great minds, died of complications from a heart condition in December. He left a legacy of innovation and individuality, beloved by all who were familiar with the ball coach.

He also left life lessons for Robertson that are on the forefront of the young quarterback's mind as he steps on campus in Waco. The night Leach passed, his last text to Robertson is one to remember.

"He said, 'Don't overthink anything, just react. You're at your best when you react,'" Robertson recalled. "So, man, I've kind of taken that and ran with it, not just on the football field but I'm going to apply it to life."

Those lessons propel Robertson into a spot at Baylor that has a lot of question marks. He'll be vying for playing time against a year-long starter in Blake Shapen, and the wisdom of Leach will be as applicable as ever.

"When you get your opportunity, you make the most of it and never turn back," he concluded. "I know I'm gonna control what I can control, and that's working hard, being a leader, bringing energy to everything I do.
