Former Baylor Bears Coach Matt Rhule in Talks With Nebraska?
29 days after the Nebraska Cornhuskers fired fifth-year coach Scott Frost, the Carolina Panthers dumped former Baylor Bears coach Matt Rhule in the third year of a seven-year contract.
Tuesday, former NFL player Will Compton tweeted out that Rhule is in Lincoln and has a "strong connection" with the Nebraska job.
Rhule was the head man in Waco for three seasons from 2017-2019 where he took the Bears from the wake of a sexual assault scandal and, after a 1-11 2017 season, took them to back-to-back winning seasons. His tenure included a Texas Bowl victory in 2018 and both a Big 12 Championship Game and Sugar Bowl appearance in 2019 before the NFL came calling.
The Carolina Panthers gave Rhule one of the richest coaching contracts in NFL history, signing him on for seven years and more than $60 million. Rhule left Charlotte unceremoniously after compiling just an 11-27 record in a little over two seasons.
Rhule does have a reputation for turning around college programs, however. Not only did he take the Baylor Bears out of the basement and within a shoestring tackle of the College Football Playoff in just three seasons, but he also took the Temple Owls to new heights before coming to Waco. At Temple, he led the Owls to a 10-win season and their first conference championship since 1967.
A program with the stature and resources such as Nebraska will be looking for a proven college coach and are in an on-field situation not too dissimilar to the ones Rhule faced at Temple and at Baylor.
The 2019 Big 12 Coach of the Year has a career college coaching record of 47-43.
