The Baylor Bears announced their starting quarterback for the season well ahead of most of their conference rivals, as Blake Shapen will look to lead the Bears to a second straight Big 12 championship.

Despite only making two starts for the Bears last season, Shapen showed flashes of being a starting caliber quarterback, which he showed again by winning the job this offseason.

In five games for the Bears last season, including starts against the Texas Tech Red Raiders and Oklahoma State Cowboys, Shapen would throw for 596 yards and five touchdowns with no interceptions.

Now, as the Bears look to defend their Big 12 crown and repeat as champions, Shapen has the confidence of his offense, as tight end Gavin Yates spoke about what he's seen from the quarterback.

"He throws a good ball and he's super consistent," Yates said. "That's what you want in a quarterback, you want the same guy day in and day out, and that's Blake Shapen to a tee."

The Bears enter the season as the favorites in the Big 12, and for good reason. They return talent across the board, especially in the trenches at offensive and defensive line. Should Shapen take the next step and build off what he showed last season then the sky's the limit for this Baylor team.
