Baylor Football Must Prioritize Defensive Coordinator Hire
Baylor football has already hit the transfer portal to replenish the offensive line and receiving corps this offseason, but Dave Aranda and company have seen very little traction to replenish a great need: a defense.
The influx of defensive players via the portal has been almost nonexistent. Why is that, you may be wondering? Well, the Bears still don't have a defensive coordinator.
Ron Roberts was fired on December 1. It has been nearly four weeks since December 1, and that position is still open. I'm not entirely worried about this since Aranda's choice may be preparing for a bowl game, but when has that stopped anyone?
Let me take you back to a game that Baylor fans are quite familiar with, the 2021 Allstate Sugar Bowl. In the contest between your Bears and the Ole Miss Rebels, Jeff Lebby, who had recently taken a position as the offensive coordinator at Oklahoma, was still with the team.
So, what's the holdup? Baylor hasn't been preparing for the College Football Playoff or a major bowl game. There's not some EMP bomb that's canceled all communication in and out of Waco. A new defensive coordinator was at the top of Baylor's wishlist, and all Santa brought was a 30-15 loss to Air Force.
Now, with players like Jaxon Player, Siaki Ika and Dillon Doyle headed to the NFL, Baylor is behind the punch in terms of the portal and there's no defensive coordinator to come to the rescue.
The Bears need a defensive coordinator, and they need one fast.
