BYU Football Offers Transfer WR Darius Lassiter
The BYU coaching staff has already added 14 transfers to the roster for the 2023 season, and they still have multiple scholarships to use on transfers. On Tuesday, BYU offered Oregon defensive line transfer Treven Ma'ae. On Wednesday, BYU extended an offer to Eastern Michigan transfer Darius Lassiter. Lassiter, a wide receiver, spent one season at Eastern Michigan where he racked up 471 receiving yards on 40 receptions including 4 touchdowns.
Lassiter was part of an Eastern Michigan team that upset Arizona State on the road and won nine games including the Idaho Potato Bowl against San Jose State. Lassiter got better as the season went on - his best performance came in the bowl game where he caught six passes for 108 yards including two touchdowns.
Lassiter has two seasons of eligibility remaining and he has received competing offers from Pitt, Boston College, Tulsa, ECU, Toledo, and UNLV since entering the transfer portal.
Lassiter signed with Eastern Michigan out of the JUCO ranks. He played at Butler Community College in 2021 where he finished with over 700 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns. He was named a JUCO All-American and was selected to the First-Team All-Conference team after the 2021 season.
Wide receiver is a position of great need. After Spring camp, offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick said BYU was short as many as three or four scholarship wide receivers.
When asked if there was a need to add receivers from the transfer portal, Roderick said, "Yes, but I want to make sure everyone knows that it's not because we're not happy with who we have. Our numbers are down right now, we don't have as many receivers in the room. We actually have three, maybe four scholarships available there that we haven't used yet. I don't think we'll use all of them, but we'll probably use a couple of them to bolster that room with depth."
Behind Kody Epps, Keanu HIll, and Chase Roberts, BYU is untested at wide receiver. Adding Lassiter would bring more experience and go a long way in securing more depth for 2023.
Stay tuned for more transfer portal updates in the coming weeks.
