Cal's Monty Bowser Enters Transfer Portal
Cal junior wing entered the transfer portal, according to Rivals.com, making him the fifth Golden Bears player to enter the portal this week.
Bowser joins Devin Askew, Rodney Brown Jr., ND Okafor and Grant Newell as Cal players who have entered the transfer portal. It leaves coach Mark Madsen a lot of work to do in the transfer portal, since at least three starts from this year's team (Fardaws Aimaq, Jalen Cone and Keonte Kennedy) will be gone, and Jaylon Tyson, who has one year of college eligibility left, is considering entering the NBA draft this year, where he is expected to be a late first-round or early second round pick.
Bowser, an Oakland resident who attended Bishop O'Dowd High School, was the Bears' only scholarship player from the Bay Area.
Bowser played 19 games this past season with four starts as a redshirt junior. He averaged 0.7 points and 1.7 rebounds in 2023-24. The only game in which he scored was the the season opener against St. Thomas, when he he had three points.
In 2022-23, he played in 32 games and started eight of them in Mark Fox's final season as head coach. He averaged 3.8 points and 1.3 rebounds that season.
Bowser redshirted the 2021-22 season and as a true freshman in 2020-21, he played in 17 games with starts and averaged 0.8 points and 0.3 rebounds.
Besides Tyson, Jalen Celestine is the only 2023-24 starter still on the roster.
