Browns Hire Former Cal Offensive Coordinator Bill Musgrave

Musgrave was fired by the Golden Bears and will be a senior offensive assistant in Cleveland

Former Cal offernsive coordinator Bill Musgrave is returning to the NFL, where he spent most of his coaching career.

Musgrave, who was dismissed by Cal head coach Justin Wilcox with two games remaining in the 2022 season, was hired by the Cleveland Browns as a senior offensive assistant, according to multiple reports.

Senior offensive assistant is an undefined role that could include a number of responsibilities, but typically means he will be a consultant or extra voice in the room when it comes to offensive strategies or personnel usage.

Alex Van Pelt is the Browns offensive coordinator and reportedly will assume the role of quarterbacks coach. Musgrave's coaching history focuses on coaching quarterbacks, but apparently he will be in advisory role for the overall operation of the offense.

Musgrave, 55, worked with Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski when both were coaches with the Vikings.

Deshaun Watson is scheduled to be the Browns starting quarterback in 2023, and apprently Musgrave will not have a direct role in coaching Watson, according to this excerpt from Mary Kay Cabpot of Cleveland.com:

But in the interest of lightening Van Pelt’s OC load a bit so he can devote extra enough time to Watson and the other QBs, Stefanski has hired his former Vikings boss Bill Musgrave, 55, as a senior offensive assistant to help run meetings and assist in the overall operation of the unit.

Musgrave was Cal's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for two full seasons and most of a third between 2020 and 2022.  However, the Bears showed little improvement offensively during Musgrave's time, and he was dismissed with two games left in the 2022 season.

Cal finished 10th in the Pac-12 in both scoring and total offense in all three seasons under Musgrave.

Musgrave has served as an offensive coach for eight NFL teams, and was an offensive coordinator for the Eagles, Panthers, Jaguars, Vikings, Raiders and Broncos.

Musgrave was a college quarterback at Oregon, becoming a starter as a freshman.  He was a fourth-round pick in the 1991 NFL draft and played for four NFL teams.
