The offensive line was Cal's biggest weakness last season, and the Bears took a step toward improving that area when they got a commitment from Texas A&M transfer Matthew Wykoff.

Wykoff announced his commitment on social media.

The 6-foot-6, 330-pound Wykoff played center for the Aggies this past season when he was redshirt freshman, and he was named to the Southeastern Conference all-freshman team at that position.

Wykoff played two seasons with the Aggies, but his first year was a redshirt season so he still has three years of eligibility remaining.

He sat out A&M's spring practice due to an undisclosed injury, according to CBS Sports.

Wykoff entered the transfer portal on April 12, one of more than two dozen players to exit the A&M program this offseason, including 10 members of the 21-player 2021 recruiting class.

Even so, CBS Sports suggested he would be a boost to whichever program lands him:

Now, Wykoff becomes one of the more intriguing transfer prospects on the offensive line. With a 6-foot-7, 335-pound frame, Wykoff has the physical gifts to slot in anywhere on the interior offensive line at the Power Five level.

He played in 16  games in his two seasons, including 12 games in 2022, when he made nine starts and was considered a key part of Texas A&M's offensive line.  He became the starting center when opening-day starter Bryce Foster was lost for the season with a knee injury.

Wykoff earned A&M's Unselfish Leadership Award at the team banquet after the season for being able to step in as a redshirt freshman.

Wykoff played high school football at Magnolia (Texas) High School, where he was a three-star prospect. He was ranked the No. 448 overall recruit in the class of 2021 by On3 Industry, and Rivals ranked him No. 655 overall and No. 48 in the state of Texas. The 247 Sports website ranked his as the 436th-best prospect in the class and the 36th-best offensive tackle.

He weighed 330 pounds when he entered college.

Coming out of high school he had offers from Notre Dame, Penn State, Tennessee, Texas, USC, Auburn, Baylor and many others.

Cal has been focusing on adding offensive linemen.  It recently got a commitment Tyler Knape, an incoming freshman from Texas.

Mike Bloesch is the Golden Bears' new offensive coordinator. Much of Cal's offensive struggles last season were attributed to poor offensive line play.
