DAYTON  A trend under Bearcats baseball head coach Scott Googins has been slow starts.

The Bearcats have always been solid in the middle of the season and caught fire in the 2019 American Conference Tournament, but they always struggled out of the gate.

This year might be different, though. Cincinnati went down to Georgia and took two out of three from the Georgia State Panthers.

Cincinnati took game one of a doubleheader on Saturday, scoring eight runs in the sixth inning en route to a 9-4 win. The eight runs came on four hits, two walks, a sacrifice fly, and 12 hitters coming to the plate. Redshirt-junior first baseman Ryan Nicholson went 3-3 with a home run, 2 RBIs, and 2 runs scored in his 100th career start.

The Cardiac Cats were at it again on Sunday, scoring twice in the seventh and eighth innings to turn a two-run deficit into a two-run win. Redshirt junior Kameron Guidry delivered the game-winning two-run single in the top of the eighth inning to help lift Cincinnati to a 6-4 win.

The Bearcats also got stellar performances on the mound. Redshirt-junior left-hander Alex Shea hurled three shutout innings while striking out four in relief in game one on Saturday to earn the win. He followed the Bearcats debut of freshman left-hander Chase Horst, who struck out five batters in four innings while only allowing 1 run on 2 hits.

Cincinnati's bullpen was spectacular on Sunday, throwing five scoreless innings with six strikeouts on only two hits.

It was also a fantastic weekend of debuts for the Bearcats. Sunday saw redshirt-sophomore infielder Sean Springer go 2-4 with an RBI in his first career start, and freshman outfielder Landyn Vidourek went 1-3 with a walk.

Two-way player Griffin Hugus hit his first career home run and notched his first career save, stranding runners on first and second in the bottom of the ninth. Sophomore designated hitter Tommy O'Connor notched his first career hit in the game on Saturday.
