WATCH: Joel Klatt blasts NCAA for denying Colorado OL Tyler Brown immediate eligibility
Joel Klatt has always been on-point about giving the NCAA "the business." The outspoken FOX Sports analyst gave his thoughts on Colorado offensive lineman Tyler Brown being forced to sit a year.
The initial details go way beyond the former Jackson State transfer having mononucleosis, as first reported. Klatt talks about Brown witnessing a traumatic event happen with his offensive line coach at Louisiana, D.J. Looney, dying of a heart attack in front of him. Brown's mental well-being took a serious hit for obvious reasons. This information was presented to the NCAA, who disregarded the facts.
"At the NCAA, they care to claim about the mental health of the athletes, but they sure aren't showing that in his case," Klatt noted. "How does this get denied?"
The NCAA voted in March to restrict the number of waivers granted to second-time transfers, trying to curb players ending up back in the portal. Under the new guidelines, a second-time transfer can only "receive immediate eligibility if they have a physical injury or mental health condition that pushed them to transfer from a school."
Klatt went on the record with about the NCAA in 2015, and it sound nearly similar compared to today.
"Unfortunately, the NCAA as it relates to their mission statement, is the worst organization I can think of Klatt told SBN's Jeff Hauser. "Their mission statement is to be there for the well-being of the student-athlete, to protect the student-athlete, and what it's morphed into is a governing body that has rules and regulations that are specifically to contain the student athlete."
Brown is one of a handful of players to be denied a second transfer with immediate eligibility by the NCAA. He's still tuned into daily activities with Colorado but won't be available until 2024.
