Deion Sanders says defensive coordinator hire coming within days at Colorado

Coach Prime has taken his time with Charles Kelly's replacement
In this story:

Deion Sanders gave an update to when a new defensive coordinator would be hired in Boulder. He spelled out the details on FOX Sports' Undisputed Tuesday, saying the latest addition to his staff would be in the coming days.

"We're probably going to hire a defensive coordinator within the next two days, maybe even today," Sanders said.

"We had to allow those pro guys to get all those interviews out. Now, we have identified a few of them because I want a pro guy who can teach and instruct at another level. That's what we have on the offense. That's what we pretty much have on the whole darn staff is guys that have taught and played the pro game. Because that's where (our players) are headed."

Coach Prime recently said he was down to his final three candidates and that the right person would have NFL experience. A few names have been linked to the opening on Sanders' staff. Many have speculated that Ed Reed or Mike Zimmer would be on the short list. Either way, both would be a solid addition for the Buffs going into the 2024 football season.

Zimmer has an NFL background and wants to return to coaching. However, the 68-year-old would have to keep up full-time on the recruiting trail to make it a splash hire. On the other hand, Reed would be phenomenal to have in Boulder. The Hall-of-Famer would relate with the players and bring much-needed experience under Prime.

One thing has been abundantly clear with this entire process. Sanders wants to make the right hire for the state of the program. This will be someone who proactively fills in gaps and is ready to be a contributing member of the staff. We'll see how everything plays out over the next few days.
