Elite Duke Basketball Target Suddenly Cancels Visit to Durham

Duke basketball may have fallen out of contention for one 2024 prospect.

St. Thomas More (Conn.) small forward Tyler Betsey was initially slated to take an official visit to the Duke basketball program this weekend alongside a fellow 2024 Blue Devil target in Wisconsin Lutheran small forward Kon Knueppel (potential 2025 Blue Devil targets Nate Ament and Nikola Bundalo will be in Durham on unofficial visits).

But according to a post from On3's Joe Tipton on Thursday afternoon, Betsey has canceled his trip to Duke the day before his planned arrival date.

The 6-foot-8, 185-pound smooth four-star, who ranks No. 1 in his state and No. 32 overall on the 247Sports 2024 Composite, received an offer from Duke basketball head coach Jon Scheyer last November.

He hosted Scheyer and assistant Chris Carrawell for an in-home visit in April. And then, in early August, Tyler Betsey included the Blue Devils among his seven finalists, along with Alabama, Cincinnati, Creighton, Indiana, UConn, and Villanova.

Betsey had spoken highly about Scheyer and his crew in several interviews since.

Perhaps a scheduling issue is the reason for his sudden cancellation. However, considering he has indicated a desire to decide on a winner in his recruitment soon, it could be that he's no longer considering Duke and doesn't want to waste the coaches' time.

Of course, it's worth pointing out that Duke basketball's 2024 class already includes two commits, both at Betsey's position, in Paul VI Catholic (Va.) four-star Darren Harris and North Meck (N.C.) five-star Isaiah Evans.
