Duke Basketball Staff Visits High-Flying 2024 Target
VJ Edgecombe, a five-star wing who ranks No. 6 overall on the 247Sports 2024 Composite and will be at Countdown to Craziness on Oct. 20 alongside other priority Duke basketball targets, included the Blue Devils in his top 10 in early August after receiving an offer from second-year head coach Jon Scheyer in early July.
He's since scheduled the upcoming official visit to Durham. And on Wednesday, national recruiting insider Andrew Slater reported that Duke coaches headed to New York to visit Edgecombe at his Long Island Lutheran High School.
The check-in indicates Scheyer and his gang still feel like players in the VJ Edgecombe sweepstakes, even though Duke basketball's pursuits of the top two prospects in the class, five-star small forward Cooper Flagg and five-star combo guard Dylan Harper, have dominated the headlines.
Edgecombe's other remaining contenders are UConn, Alabama, Baylor, Florida, Florida State, Michigan, St. John's, Miami, and G League Ignite. The 6-foot-5, 180-pound dynamic perimeter weapon took an official visit to Baylor last weekend and has scheduled trips to Alabama and Florida State for the first two weekends in November.
He checked out Florida on an official visit in September.
Between the 247Sports Crystal Ball, Rivals FutureCast, and On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, no insiders have predicted a winner for VJ Edgecombe.
Two weeks ago, 247Sports' Travis Branham noted that "this will be a recruitment we will likely be following for months to come and potentially through the winter."
Meanwhile, the Blue Devils have commitments from three premier 2024 small forwards: Darren Harris, Kon Knueppel, and Isaiah Evans. Furthermore, as alluded to above, they remain in the mix for Cooper Flagg and Dylan Harper, not to mention several other heralded recruits in the class.
