Florida Forward Aleks Szymczyk Cleared to Return vs. Missouri

Florida Gators forward Aleks Szymczyk, who suffered a broken foot in late August, has been cleared to return to action on Saturday vs. Missouri.

Just over four months removed from breaking his foot during a preseason workout, Gators forward Aleks Szymczyk has been cleared to return to action, head coach Todd Golden shared with local media on Friday.

Szymczyk will now be available for the first time in the 2023-24 campaign for UF’s matchup with Missouri in Columbia (Mo.) on Saturday. The nature of Frankfurt, Germany, returned to five-on-five practice earlier this month, according to reports by Swamp247, and has been participating in pregame warmups with the unit during league play despite being unavailable for action.

As he transitioned to the style of college basketball, the stretch big performed in a limited role for the Gators throughout most of his true freshman campaign in 2022-23.

However, upon the season-ending injury to Colin Castleton in February, he was thrust into a larger role in Florida’s thin frontcourt rotation as relief for former UF center Jason Jitoboh

Szymczyk finished the season accounting for 2.1 points, 1.3 rebounds and a 39.3% mark from the field in 7.8 minutes per game in 14 appearances.

Initially, the 6-foot-10, 250-pound forward was given a 10-12-week timeline for his return to the hardwood after his hurt and minor surgery. His process was prolonged, though, as he and the Florida staff operated with diligence to ensure his recovery to full health.

The return notably aids the depth rotation at the four spot for the Gators, adding an extra piece to a spot primarily occupied by Tyrese Samuel with frequent appearances from true freshman Thomas Haugh while Alex Condon and Micah Handlogten primarily operate exclusively at the five spot.

While he is unlikely to see a high-volume of time for the Gators this season — serving as the fifth big man — his presence provides Florida the luxury of playing aggressively down low without the lingering worry of foul trouble for the four-man frontcourt.

Florida’s contest against Missouri will tip off at 8 p.m. ET on ESPNU.
