Florida State Spring Camp Observations: D'Mitri Emmanuel Returns to Practice as Offense Flashes

The Seminoles got a boost on offense with a veteran back in the lineup on Tuesday.

The final week of the spring is here and it started off with a boost for Florida State's offense. On Tuesday, the program learned that veteran offensive lineman D'Mitri Emmanuel had his waiver approved to suit up for a seventh collegiate season. Emmanuel was back in full pads during practice, instantly adding another competitive body to a room that is battling for spots, and he didn't miss a beat.

Head coach Mike Norvell came out of the day pleased with the effort but there are still some aspects to be tuned up ahead of the Garnet & Gold Spring Showcase on Saturday. For one, Norvell wants to see more consistency out of his receivers and seemed to challenge the unit, which wasn't at full strength on Tuesday.

NoleGameday was in attendance for the entire practice and jotted down some observations below of some details that stood out during the session.

— Former Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett and future Hall of Fame tight end Jason Witten viewed Florida State's practice from the sidelines today. Garrett is the brother of FSU's Director of Scouting, John Garrett.

— The kicking battle was up and down on Tuesday. Ryan Fitzgerald connected from 38 yards out early in practice before making a kick from about 50 yards. Tyler Keltner came up short from 53 yards and also missed from 45 yards.

OFFENSE:

— The defense got plenty of pressure on quarterback Jordan Travis to start off practice during two-minute/tempo drills. The unit worked its way downfield on the back of a couple of plays from running back Lawrance Toafili, leading to Fitzgerald's kick.

— On Tate Rodemaker's possession, the veteran signal-caller hit tight end Preston Daniel on the opening play. It was a busted coverage that probably would've led to a touchdown in a game scenario. Rodemaker was also able to show off the wheels with a run into the middle of the defense that he cut to the outside for a solid gain.

— As previously mentioned, D'Mitri Emmanuel was back in full pads for the first time this spring and provided an instant boost to the offensive line. He was impressive throughout the day and even displayed his athleticism and awareness on a play where he pulled to the opposite side and re-engaged with a linebacker. Absolutely huge for the Seminoles to have him back.

— Wide receiver Mycah Pittman was observing practice after undergoing hip surgery a couple of weeks ago. He's not in a condition to get back on the field this spring but it's still positive to see him back around the team on a consistent basis.

— The running backs were consistently making plays throughout the practice. Rodney Hill did the most damage on the ground, earning some praise from Norvell. Trey Benson came down with multiple catches and appears to be taking a step forward as a receiver. Toafili and CJ Campbell also had a few splashes.

— Deuce Spann had one of the catches of the day with a vertical grab on the sideline while a defensive back was all over him.

— Kentron Poitier nearly matched Spann with a catch towards the end of practice that he corralled as he was falling to the ground. Poitier has been one of the standouts for the wide receivers this spring.

— Jaheim Bell continues to be moved all around the field. He was able to get free from a safety during 1-on-1s for a big gain.

— Preston Daniel nearly scored a touchdown at the beginning of practice and had another tough grab over the middle where he was popped right as the ball arrived.

— Vandrevius Jacobs had another early drop during practice but responded from that point. He came down with a touchdown during 1-on-1s against Fentrell Cypress II and scored again in 7-on-7.

— Ja'Khi Douglas showed off his nifty route-running by leaving a couple of defensive backs in the dust. He had Greedy Vance guessing during a 1-on-1 rep where he worked back to the ball for a touchdown.

— Jerrale Powers came down with an impressive grab despite being interfered with.

— Kyle Morlock brought one down in the end zone that was close to being out of bounds.

— Bless Harris dominated Jared Verse during a rep in 1-on-1s. The two were matched up again and both players showed good effort.

— The offense came out on top during third-down work against the defense. I believe they were able to convert on every rep during the period.

DEFENSE:

— Rising sophomore Azareye'h Thomas was active throughout Tuesday's practice. He broke up a pass that was intended for Hykeem Williams during 1-on-1s before coming away with a deflection on his next rep. Thomas accrued another pass deflection before the day was over.

— Jared Verse continues to impress. He worked down the line and blew up a running back before letting Jordan Travis know about it. Later in team drills, Verse pursued Travis from the opposite side of the field, eventually forcing the quarterback to get rid of the ball.

— Cornerback Fentrell Cypress II had an impressive rep in 1-on-1s where he pressed Deuce Spann and prevented the wide receiver from getting into his route, forcing an incompletion.

— Renardo Green got his hands on a pass that was intended for Spann on the sidelines. Both players went up vertical and Green made the play.

— True freshman Quindarrius Jones has turned in a productive spring camp. He shed a block and tacked CJ Campbell on a short pass to the outside before deflecting a throw into the end zone down the stretch of the practice.

— Linebacker Omar Graham Jr. is coming along day by day. He stuck with Jaheim Bell on a route to the sideline early in practice, getting in position to knock the ball out. Graham was also able to get off a blocker and bring down Rodney Hill in space as the day went on.

— Byron Turner came away with a tackle for loss and also displayed good effort on a rep where he pursued AJ Duffy across the field.

— Omarion Cooper intercepted a pass in the end zone that was deflected by another defensive back. The lone forced turnover of the practice.

— Darrell Jackson blew up a gap and ended a running play before it got started to the delight of Odell Haggins.
