Florida State's Projected 2023 Scholarship Count: Where The Numbers Stand Following The Spring
Spring practice has wrapped up and the only thing separating Florida State from the 2023 season is the upcoming sweltering summer in Tallahassee. The period proved beneficial for the Seminoles as a combination of returners and newcomers showed plenty of positive signs. The internal and external expectations surrounding the program are as high as they've been in recent years.

The Seminoles entered the spring slightly over the scholarship limit but five players have departed from the roster since March, including four since Monday. With defensive end Derrick McLendon II and linebacker Brendan Gant moving on, Florida State suddenly finds itself a little thin at a couple of positions on defense. That means it wouldn't be a surprise if the coaching staff continues to utilize a tool that's provided plenty of success thus far, the portal.
Let's take a look at where the projected scholarship numbers stand with summer on the horizon.

Freshmen: 31
Exiting the spring, Florida State sits slightly below the limit with 84 projected scholarships that have been allocated for the 2023 season. It wouldn't be a surprise if a couple of other players on the roster elect to enter the portal which would provide the Seminoles even more room to work with. At the same, the program isn't in need of a ton of attrition and the bones of the roster are essentially in place.
It's important to note, as always, that there's uncertainty surrounding whether redshirt junior tight end Preston Daniel, redshirt sophomore running back CJ Campbell, or redshirt freshman defensive end Dante Anderson are on scholarship. The program hasn't provided official clarification one way or the other. The number doesn't include 2021 signee and wide receiver Destyn Hill at this time with growing whispers he will make it to campus before the fall. For now, we will leave them out of the count.
Plus, redshirt junior running back Caziah Holmes wasn't on scholarship during the fall. NoleGameday is currently projecting him to be elevated to a member of the 85-man roster which remains a possibility after former star Treshaun Ward transferred to Kansas State.
As mentioned previously, the Seminoles are thin on experience off the edge and at linebacker outside of the starters. The team could also use another piece at safety depending on what options become available in the portal. Stay tuned because the final roster isn't totally pieced together just yet.
