FSU Football Legacy Wide Receiver Breaks Down History With Program, Recruitment

What led to Camdon Frier's commitment to Florida State?

Florida State wide receiver Camdon Frier is an early enrollee in the program's 2024 signing class, but he also happens to be a Seminole Legacy. His father spent 1989 to 1993 with the program, and his uncle was with FSU from 1995 to 1999. The family ties are strong for the wide receiver, but that wasn't what drove him to Tallahassee.

“I came a Florida State fan out of the womb," Frier said. "It’s always had a special place in my heart. I went through my recruitment process; Coach Norvell and Coach Dugans jumped on me first and made me feel wanted. ...My dad had a little factor, but it’s mostly Coach Norvell.”

Since arriving in Tallahassee, Norvell has turned the program in the right direction after Florida State had a few down years. A big part of the turnaround was done through the transfer portal, but he made the program a target destination again, helping his case to recruit big-time prospects.

"The first real meeting I had with coach Norvell was after a camp and my dad was out of the room and he said 'Listen, I can't offer kids because of their dads. I'll lose my job. I want you for you. I have a lot of respect for your dad and he helped build this place, but I don't care about that,'" Frier explained. "That really meant a lot to me. I went home, thought about it and I committed not long after that."

Something that should be noted about Frier is his commitment to carving out his own path and his own legacy, not living in the shadows of what his father did at Florida State. Norvell knows that and it was a part of what he said when recruiting Frier to the Seminoles.

"I love my father, but at the same time one of my main goals here is to do my own thing," Frier said. "I love Florida State, I love Tallahassee and there's no place I'd rather be. Guys know that and coaches know that. We talk about Pops very regularly, but they know I want to do my own thing and be my own guy."

For Frier, it's got to be an incredible feeling to work in the old stomping grounds of his father and uncle while joining a program that will allow him to be a part of something special while building his own legacy. One of his biggest goals, as he alluded to, was doing his own thing, and doing so in Tallahassee is possible despite the family ties.

In 2023, Frier finished with 456 receiving yards on 36 catches while reeling in five touchdowns. At 6-foot, 185 pounds, Frier is going to rely on his speed to create separation as he continues to develop to eventually contribute to the Seminoles at the wide receiver position.

If he can win a national championship at Florida State as his father and uncle did, the move will have worked out for everyone involved.
