How Does PFF Grade Players?
PFF employs 600 full or part-time analysts who grade every single snap by every single player on offense, defense, and special teams during the game. The grades are calculated on a per-play basis where each play is broken down to grades of -2 to +2 in 0.5 increments. An average or expected play would result in a grade of zero, a game-ending turnover would bring in a grade of -2, and a perfect touchdown throw to win a game would be worth +2.
These apply to every single player on every play. For instance, a quarterback throwing a good pass that is dropped by a wide receiver would earn a positive grade. The wide receiver who dropped the ball would receive a negative grade while the offensive tackle protecting the blind side would get positive marks as well.
Obviously, PFF can't be certain on the assignments of every given player on a play but they grade on what the player is attempting to do. Plays in which there is a question mark can be deferred to as a zero. Hopefully, this provides a little bit of clarification on some of the details you'll view below.
Offense:
Highest Graded Players:
1. CJ Campbell (86.6) - 10 snaps
Don't ask me if we dropped down the qualifying snaps from 15 to 10 so CJ Campbell could make the cut. He led the team with three carries for 78 yards for a touchdown, including a career-high 70-yard burst.
2. Vandrevius Jacobs (83.9) - 10 snaps
Jacobs caught his lone target for 28 yards as the true freshman continues to come along. He was the highest-graded receiver on the team.
3. D'Mitri Emmanuel (77.7) - 49 snaps
In his final game in Doak Campbell Stadium, veteran D'Mitri Emmanuel locked down the right guard spot while proving himself as the most consistent offensive lineman of the week.
4. Lawrance Toafili (76.9) - 31 snaps
Toafili rushed four times for 30 yards and a touchdown while leading the team in receptions with four catches for 38 yards. He had a cool moment when the 2013 team swarmed him after his score in the second quarter.
5. Brock Glenn (76.5) - 15 snaps
Glenn earned his first playing time since the home opener in September and made the most of it. He completed 2/3 passes for 35 yards while rushing four times for five yards and the first touchdown of his career.
Lowest Graded Players:
5. Jeremiah Byers (57.6) - 57 snaps
Byers was one of two offensive linemen to play over 50 snaps against North Alabama. He had to play a big role with Darius Washington shifting to center after Maurice Smith's injury.
4. Ja'Khi Douglas (54.7) - 25 snaps
Douglas didn't end up recording a catch after his productive performances against Pittsburgh and Miami.
3. Jackson West (54.5) - 17 snaps
West earned some playing time with the game out of hand.
2. Jaylen Early (54.0) - 15 snaps
Early entered the game at left tackle in the fourth quarter and was called for holding on an outside run.
1. Destyn Hill (45.1) - 16 snaps
Hill graded out as the lowest-ranked player on offense and didn't record a catch.
