LSU Quarterback Jayden Daniels Discusses Upcoming Rematch With FSU Football

The Tigers are looking to avenge their loss against Florida State in Week One.

One of the games of the year in college football last season was Florida State's one-point triumph over the LSU Tigers in New Orleans. After jumping out to a 24-10 advantage late in the fourth quarter, LSU rallied back with two touchdown drives in the final 4:07.

That included an 11-play, 99-yard drive as quarterback Jayden Daniels found Jaray Jenkins in the back of the end zone for a score with no time remaining on the clock. Instead of going for the win, the Tigers chose to kick the extra point attempt.

That ended up being the wrong decision as safety Shyheim Brown came flying in to block Damian Ramos' kick. The moment sent a mix of excitement and shock across the Caesars Dome.

The feeling is something that LSU redshirt junior quarterback Jayden Daniels doesn't want to feel again. The dual-threat signal-caller was a counselor at the Manning Passing Academy last weekend. He ended up speaking to the media during the event and naturally, the rematch with the Seminoles came up.

“We earmark it because it’s the first one. I mean, we all know what happened last year. We want that taste out of our mouth," Daniels said in an interview with WGNO-TV at the Manning Passing Academy. "We’re going to go up against a great opponent in Florida State that hit the high note at the end of the season so we know it’s going to be a dogfight, but I mean, it’s the first one. It should be a top-10 matchup, so all eyes are going to be on us. Just go out there and really just locking in, just go out there and executing."

Daniels completed 25/34 passes for 209 yards with two passing touchdowns and zero interceptions in the defeat. He was even more deadly on the ground, rushing 16 times for 114 yards, his second-highest total of the entire season.

It's clear that the Tigers have this game circled on the calendar with aspirations to make a playoff run. However, you can say the same thing about Florida State.

“It’s very critical. We’re going to play tough games down the stretch. We win that game one, last year we lost game one and we had aspirations of going to the playoffs, so it's kind of hard," Daniels said. "You play a lot of close games. Once you lose that second game it’s kind of hard to get back into that contention and the playoff spot at the end of the year. Winning game one is always very critical, especially for things we want to accomplish.”

Florida State (10-3) and LSU (10-4) both finished with double-digit wins and bowl victories in 2022. Both teams are expected to be among the highest-ranked teams in the country to begin the season.

The Seminoles and Tigers will face off on Sunday, September 3 at 7:30 p.m. from Orlando at Camping World Stadium.
