Mike Norvell Provides An Update On Johnny Wilson's Injury Status

Wilson left the game early on Saturday but it seems like he won't be away from the field for long.

Florida State fans let out a collective gasp in Doak Campbell Stadium when star wide receiver Johnny Wilson stayed down on the field following a catch in the opening minutes of the third quarter in the win against Virginia Tech. After being escorted to the sidelines and evaluated in the medical tent, Wilson retreated to the locker room for the remainder of the contest.

It wasn't immediately clear if he was dealing with a lower-body injury or potential concussion. In the aftermath, head coach Mike Norvell didn't have a ton to say about his status. Regardless, hours after the game went final, Wilson put out a promising message on social media, making it seem like he had dodged a potentially serious injury.

After a few days to gather further information, Norvell provided an update on Wilson during his weekly press conference to kick off game week. Based on his comments, it appears that he won't be out long-term.

"It's gonna be something that we see as we go throughout the course of the week. Johnny was feeling better yesterday and so we're excited about where we think it can go but we will ultimately take it day by day this week," Norvell said on Monday. "I thought he did a wonderful job there in the first half on Saturday and he really has taken his game to another level just in how he played and what he's been able to do. Hopeful to be able to get him back rolling back here early in the week."

Despite missing most of the second half due to injury, Wilson led the Seminoles with four catches for 54 yards and two scores against the Hokies. He reeled in both of his touchdown catches in the first quarter as Florida State got off to a fast start.

The touchdowns against Virginia Tech marked his first two trips to the end zone in 2023. On the season, Wilson leads Florida State in receiving with 20 catches for 357 yards and two touchdowns.

Florida State returns to action on Saturday in a conference matchup against Syracuse at 12:00 p.m. on ABC.
