Off-Field Staffer Leaves FSU Football For GM Position With Duke Football
There are coaching changes across the country every offseason and Florida State will be no exception. The program isn't expected to lose a ton of staffers but typically a couple of coaches in Tallahassee earn promotions each year.
Shortly into the new year, the Seminoles have already had their first departure of 2024. Director of Scouting, John Garrett, updated his social media to reflect that he had left FSU to take the General Manager of Player Personnel position at Duke. He'll be joining new head coach Manny Diaz's staff in an elevated role.

The Seminoles hired Garrett in March of 2022 following his stint as a head coach for FCS Lafayette. He spent his time at Florida State evaluating the offense in multiple avenues, whether that was scouting the program's own roster or taking a deeper look at prospects from the high school level and potential transfers.
While at Lafayette, Garrett compiled a 15-33 record over his five seasons. He coached three All-Americans, 58 all-conference performers, and 13 academic all-conference selections. He's also held jobs as the offensive coordinator at Oregon State (2014) and Richmond (2016), and the wide receivers coach at Virginia (2004-07) at the college level. Garrett briefly worked for Florida in 2015.
Garrett has spent 18 years coaching in the NFL. He's held a variety of different positions including wide receivers coach for the Cincinnati Bengals (1996) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2013), the quarterbacks coach for the Arizona Cardinals (1999-2000), and tight ends coach for the Dallas Cowboys (2007-12). Garrett worked as an offensive assistant for the Bengals on two separate occasions (1997-98, 2001) and began his career in personnel for the Buccaneers (1992-94).
His family is synonymous with football as Garrett's brother, Jason, was the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys from 2010-19. Their father, Jim, spent 38 years in the league as head coach, assistant coach, and scout for the New York Giants, Houston Texans, New Orleans Saints, and Cleveland Browns.
Florida State will travel to Durham in 2024 to face the Blue Devils. The Seminoles took down Duke, 38-21, this past season in front of a sold-out Doak Campbell Stadium.
