Report: Florida State Athletics Director Michael Alford Undergoing Neck Surgery

Alford has quickly developed into a revered figure during his two-year tenure in Tallahassee.

Florida State Athletics Director Michael Alford will be sidelined for the next couple of weeks while recovering from a neck surgery that he's undergoing in South Florida.

According to the Tallahassee Democrat's Jim Henry, Alford is expected to make a full recovery from the procedure but he has also been diagnosed with cervical spinal stenosis. While Alford is getting back to 100%, FSU Deputy Athletics Director for Administration Cindy Hartmann will handle the day-to-day business.

Alford has quickly developed into a revered figure during his tenure in Tallahassee. He was a key proponent in multiple coaching hires since taking over in January of 2022. Alford has hired new head coaches for baseball, women's soccer, and women's basketball while playing an important role in retaining Mike Norvell during his recent courtship with Alabama.

The period ended with Norvell signing a new eight-year deal that made him one of the highest-paid college football head coaches in the country. Norvell will make more than $10 million in all six of the final years in the contract, including $10.835 million in 2031.

The Seminoles have also made improvements to their athletic facilities over the past couple of years as the program gives itself the best opportunity to compete in multiple sports. Florida State has already broken ground on a 150,000-square-foot Football Only Facility and is in the process of upgrading the historic Doak Campbell Stadium.

Alford previously worked with Seminole Boosters, the Dallas Cowboys, the University of Alabama, the University of Oklahoma, the University of Southern California, the Cincinnati Bengals and was Associate Vice President and Director of Athletics at Central Michigan University from 2017-2020. He played baseball at Mississippi State before earning his bachelor's degree from UAB and master's from Arkansas.
