WATCH: FSU RB Trey Benson Breaks The Rock As Seminoles Conclude Preseason Camp

Mike Norvell singled out Trey Benson to break the rock after a strong preseason camp.

Following 19 practices over the last four weeks, Florida State concluded its preseason camp on Saturday night inside of Doak Campbell Stadium. As has become a tradition under head coach Mike Norvell, the Seminoles broke a rock at midfield to signify the completion of their final task ahead of the 2023 campaign.

The honor could've gone to a wide array of players on the roster but Norvell singled out star running back Trey Benson to handle the sledgehammer. Benson is coming off a strong camp and appears to have settled in at Florida State prior to his second season with the program.

"Trey Benson broke the rock to kind of finish up camp. He's gone every day. His spirit, his mentality, work ethic, he's a great teammate and he's somebody that's really embodied that," Norvell said following the practice. "You see the work and the numbers of what he's put in and then also what I see and appreciate is just the impact on those around him. It could of went to a lot of people, we've got plenty of guys that could of positioned themselves to break the rock but I think Trey's been really good this fall camp."

"I just think his confidence. When he got here, there was a lot of unknowns in a sense for him to just go out and do it. Coming off a major injury, what was that going to look like? We kind of brought him along, we were really confident in what it was going to be just helping him along through that journey," Norvell continued. "You see what he was able to accomplish last year in a first year, still just having to grow through that each week. As he's gone through spring, as he's gone through summer, all of it, what he's being asked to do, what he's capable of doing, I mean, he's really taken another step and I appreciate that."

The redshirt junior felt blessed to earn the honor from Norvell. Benson is looking forward to getting the season rolling with his teammates.

"That felt great, it was unexpected, I was like playing with my shoulder pads and I just heard my name being called, and I'm like, 'woah, it's me?', Benson said. "I'm blessed to be able to break the rock after fall camp, and I'm just ready to go with the guys."

Benson was a Second-Team All-ACC selection in 2022 after rushing 154 times for 990 yards and nine touchdowns. He was named the conference player of the week three consecutive times and four times overall while ranking first in the ACC with an average of 6.46 yards per attempt.

Florida State will kick off its highly-anticipated season on Sunday, September 3 in Orlando against LSU.
