Former FSU Football Running Back Dalvin Cook to be Released by Minnesota Vikings

After attempts to trade him, the Minnesota Vikings told Dalvin Cook that they would be releasing him.

As the NFL offseason continues, teams are continually addressing their future needs. All offseason, the signs have pointed towards the Minneosta Vikings moving on from former Florida State running back Dalvin Cook.

For the Vikings, who were unable to find a trade partner that made sense to ship Cook out, they’re ready to turn to backup running back Alexander Mattison to take the keys of the rushing offense. After many years of falling short of winning anything substantial, no matter how good of a regular season they may have had, it was time for a roster shakeup for the Vikings.

On Thursday, ESPN Insider Adam Schefter reported that the Vikings informed Cook that they would be releasing him, making him a free agent.

The former Seminole now holds the power in choosing where he will be playing next season, assuming the Vikings strike out on a trade one last time. Before formally releasing Cook, the Vikings are going to search and try for a trade one last time.

Though Cook may be aging, this past season he started every single game for the first time in his career, and his health has been a key issue in his six-year career.

Once released, the Seminole’s all-time rushing yards leader is expected to pick up interest from the Miami Dolphins, who would be able to sign him outright.

In Cook’s final season with Florida State, he rushed for 2,253 scrimmage yards on the season, tallying 20 touchdowns. His play led to being unanimously selected as an All-American. The former second round pick has been selected for every Pro Bowl since becoming a full-time starter in 2019.

All in all, Cook is going to be a good pickup for whichever team is able to sign him this offseason. With the Dolphins, who attempted to trade for Cook, likely having interest, it’ll be interesting to see who else tries to sign the four-time Pro Bowler.
