The Jets will look a lot different this year with star quarterback Aaron Rodgers under center. There's also at least one player on the roster switching numbers as training camp gets underway.
Earlier Saturday, rising star defensive end Jermaine Johnson II teased a number change on Instagram after showing off No. 11 at his locker. The switch became official when Johnson walked out to practice wearing the same number he donned at Florida State, Georgia, Independence Community College, and Eden Prairie High School.
Johnson previously suited up in No. 52 throughout his rookie year. He appeared in 14 games, racking up 29 tackles, three tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, and one safety. Johnson is expected to grow into a bigger role in 2023 and he's ready to prove it with his physical mindset. He got into two fights during New York's first practice - which shows how amped up he is to get back on the field.
The Minnesota native has been a consistent presence in Tallassee while preparing for his second season with the Jets. He had an All-American Brick unveiled in his honor outside of Doak Campbell Stadium in March where figures such as head coach Mike Norvell, athletic director Michael Alford, and some of his former teammates celebrated his accomplishments with the Seminoles.
Johnson only spent one year at Florida State but made an impact that will be remembered for time to come as the program continues to work its way back to the upper echelon of college football. He was named a First-Team All-American, a First-Team All-ACC selection, and the conference's Defensive Player of the Year after totaling 70 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss, 11.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, and a defensive touchdown in 2021.
