Georgia Predicted to Win SEC, Carson Beck to be Heisman Finalist

ESPN's Mark Schlabach predicts that Georgia will not only win the SEC this year, but quarterback Carson Beck will also be a Heisman finalist.

Some substantial news broke out of Athens this weekend as head coach Kirby Smart announced that Carson Beck would be the team's starting quarterback for the upcoming season. Many believed Beck would ultimately win the job, and Smart's confirmation helps visualize how the Bulldogs will look in 2023.

Even before Beck was officially named the starter, the Bulldogs were believed to be the favorite to win the SEC for the second year in a row and potentially win a third straight national title during the upcoming season. ESPN staff writer Mark Schlabach recently made the same prediction, but he added another big-time prediction alongside Georgia winning the conference this season.

Schlabach noted that he also believes that Beck will be a Heisman Trophy finalist this season. "Beck attempted only 35 passes as a backup last season, and he has the unenviable task of replacing Stetson Bennett, who led the Bulldogs to consecutive national championships," Schlabach wrote. "While Beck lacks Bennett's mobility, he does have a stronger arm. He's also going to benefit from something Bennett didn't have: a deep and talented receiver corps. Mississippi State Bulldogs transfer Rara Thomas and Missouri Tigers transfer Dominic Lovett give Beck two more options to go with Ladd McConkey, Bowers and others."

If Beck does earn the honor of getting to make the trip to New York for the Heisman Trophy ceremony, it would be the second year in a row that a Georgia quarterback would hold a seat as Stetson Bennett did last season. It's also worth noting that Schlabach predicted tight end Brock Bowers to be the SEC's offensive player of the year.

Schlabach, of course, is not the first sports media member to predict Georgia to remain on top of the sport, and he most likely won't be the last either. With less than two weeks to go until Georgia officially kicks off their 2023 campaign, the shape of this year's depth chart is really starting to take shape and look the part of a national title-contending team.
