Who Will Fill Brock Bowers' Role in Georgia Tight End Room
College football is so fun because teams constantly look to reload their rosters with the next best player, but for the University of Georgia's sake, they wish this wasn't the case for their tight end room. A generational talent like Brock Bowers is hard to come across for any program, but his time in Athens has ended as he departs for the NFL Draft.
Eyes now turn to what the Bulldogs have remaining in this position group and who will take over the vital role that Bowers had created for himself with his three years in Georgia. Georgia has added a transfer addition to their tight end room, leaving questions surrounding what may happen with their group.
Benjamin Yurosek comes from Stanford with loads of experience, coming in with four years of experience with the Cardinals. He isn't the only one with serious playing time in Georgia's tight end room, with Oscar Delp filling in for Brock Bowers during his tightrope ankle surgery. Delp did a good job and proved why he could be a versatile piece to Georgia's offense, but his body isn't molded for the role of Bowers.
Delp's freshman season, he sat behind Bowers and Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Darnell Washington. He saw what his future would look like before Bowers departed, so he molded his body to fit Washington's role before going to the NFL. It wouldn't be crazy for him to lose that weight again, but it wouldn't be too smart. He has paved himself a role in the Bulldogs' offense and fit into that role extremely well.
Yurosek seems like the probable player to step into one of the largest shoes anyone in college football has to fill, which would be Bowers' role. The tight end reverses and tight end screens are something Delp could do at a high rate, but Yurosek has been doing it with the Cardinals. The question then becomes, who will start for the Bulldogs when their season opener comes against Clemson?
You have a fifth-year senior entering into a new program but with loads of valuable experience and film. But you also have a rising junior in Delp who has been engraved within the program and should know the playbook like the back of his hands. The eyes should remain on him to be TE1 when fall rolls around, with Yurosek being a vital piece to their offense and adding depth to an inexperienced yet talented room.
Although they still have all of spring practice and fall camp to make a mark on who will be the starter, it could be a safe bet to have Delp starting, with Yurosek coming in for a more versatile option in the passing game, like Bowers was his three years in Athens.
