What do Rara Thomas and Dominic Lovett Bring to Georgia?
Georgia will see some new faces amongst their receiving corps this Spring with the freshman they brought in from the 2023 recruiting class, but the Bulldogs also reeled in two wide receivers via the transfer portal that could make some noise this Spring. Rara Thomas made the transition from Mississippi State to Athens and Dominic Lovett from Missouri. So what do both of them bring Georgia?
This offseason, Georgia saw AD Mitchell hit the transfer portal and head off to join the Texas Longhorns and long-time veteran of the team Kearis Jackson is now preparing for his professional career. Those two departures provide an opportunity for players to fight for playing time for the upcoming season, and both Thomas and Lovett will play a part in that.
Lovett at Missouri most played from the slot, which is most likely what he will do at Georgia. Last season, he piled up 56 receptions for 846 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Lovett is a big-time playmaker as he averaged 12.2 yards per reception and finished inside the top 20 amongst all college players for explosive receiving plays. He will have to compete for playing time with Ladd McConkey and Arian Smith, but he has the potential to get his fair share of reps in 2023.
As for Thomas, he will compete for playing time as Georgia's X-receiver meaning he will be lining up on the outside for the most part. He had a solid season with the Bulldogs out west, with 44 receptions for 626 yards and seven touchdowns. He led his team in receiving yards and will be a starter contender when Fall rolls around.
However, just like Lovett, Thomas will have to earn his playing time. Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint is coming off of a solid season for Georgia and will be battling it out with the transfer wide receiver. Both Dillon Bell and De'Nylon Morrisette are heading into their second season as college football players and could also make a push. Jackson Meeks is another name to remember as he is heading into his third season as a Bulldog.
Regardless of what Lovett and Thomas' role looks like for the 2023 season, they add SEC experience and depth to Georgia's roster. These two wide receivers have already found success in the SEC, and they could transpire into valuable contributors for Georgia's offense. It all starts in the Spring though and making a solid first impression with their new team would be a great place to start.
