Carson Beck's Experience Ultimately Gave Him the Edge in Georgia's Starting Quarterback
The competition to replace Stetson Bennett as Georgia's starting quarterback is over, as Head Coach Kirby Smart officially named redshirt junior Carson Beck the team's starter when he met with the media following the Bulldogs' second scrimmage of fall camp.
According to the Georgia head coach, the decision to name Beck the team's starting quarterback was communicated within the team earlier in the week.
"Carson Beck is going to be our starting quarterback. He's done the best job. We've communicated that earlier in the week to the other quarterbacks and we've kind of been operating that way and the other guys have done a tremendous job in terms of competing and they're going to continue to do that."
Beck is entering his fourth year in the Georgia offense and Smart indicated that it was that experience that put the redshirt junior over the top in the competition.
"Carson is ahead of the other guys in terms of what he understands about the offense. I'll be honest with you, I was really impressed with the other two quarterbacks throughout camp, and how far they've come in terms of improvement. Coach Bobo has done a great job with those guys and they both made a lot of plays with their feet and did some good things. Carson has been in this offense for a year over one of them and two years over Gunner and he's just ahead, so he'll be our starting quarterback.
Smart indicated that the Jacksonville, Florida native had an impressive camp prior to learning that he would get the nod to open the season as Georgia's starting quarterback, and has continued his strong play in the aftermath of the decision being communicated to Georgia's quarterbacks.
"He understood, he got a pretty good volume of those reps anyway. He's done well prior to knowing that and he's done well post-knowing that. And to be honest, both Gunner and Brock have to, they've done a tremendous job of growing and continuing to put the offense in positions to be successful and make explosive plays so they've all done a good job of that."
With Beck named Georgia's starting quarterback, attention now turns to the competition to serve as Beck's top backup at the position. According to Smart, that battle is ongoing.
"We haven't said anything in terms of who the second quarterback is and how those reps are going to be divvied up but."
With two weeks remaining before the Bulldogs open the season against UT-Martin on Sep. 2, Smart explained that redshirt sophomore Brock Vandagriff and sophomore Gunner Stockton will continue to battle for the No.2 quarterback job leading into the season.
"As far as the other guys, I'm excited to see those guys hopefully have an opportunity to play, compete, they'll be able to go with the ones here in the next two weeks some and get more reps and figure out, even if we have a two, who that's going to be and how it's going to go forward."
Now that Beck has emerged victorious in Georgia's starting quarterback competition, the Bulldogs will focus on building cohesiveness with the offense as the Bulldogs prepare to embark on the quest for a third-consecutive national championship.
