Amarius Mims Snubbed From ESPN Top 100 List
With college football starting in just one week, ESPN recently released their top 100 players list for college football. Georgia had six players named to the list within the top 50, but we here at Dawgs Daily believe a few Georgia players were snubbed, including Amarius Mims.
As Dawgs Daily has reported, Mims has an unpassable size on the offensive line. Growing from a 6' 6" profile to now standing at 6' 8". Sources tell Dawgs Daily that Mims could be a first-round draft pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. He also has an 85" wingspan and could run as low as a 4.9 40-yard dash.
Out of the entire list, only seven players named were offensive linemen, which may speak to the nature of the way that position group is "noticed" on the field. But, when Mims is on the field, he's unnoticeable. Rewatching the national championship game against TCU, a few reps stand out of Mims'.
Play number one comes with 4 minutes and 10 seconds left in the second quarter, ball on TCU's 44-yard line. Georgia's offensive coordinator Todd Monken drew up a "draw" play, where Mims had to be patient, then attack and turn out the defensive end lined up in a head-up position, who seemingly is squatted down in their stance to try and keep his pad level low against the bigger Mims.
Mims played it perfectly, chopping his feet once the snap happened, then running his feet to the opponents' toes and exploding his pads through the defender - never really allowing him to get his feet in the ground. Then later in the same drive, the Dawgs were lined up just outside of TCU's goalline and ran a run play, where Mims exploded off the ball for a down block and turned his defenders' shoulders, and threw him into a dog pile, allowing Kendall Milton to come through for an easy touchdown.
Mims had a chance to get reps behind both of the Dawgs NFL draft picks from the o-line last season in Broderick Jones and Warren McClendon, two valuable players to get mental reps from. Mims is a physical blocker who protects his quarterback at all costs. According to PFF, Mims hasn't allowed a sack or a QB hit in his 184 pass-blocking snaps in 2022 and received a 77.5 grade on their scale.
ESPN has four tackles listed above Mims: Joe Alt, Olu Fashanu, JC Latham, and Sataoa Laumea. All the players named are talented in their own regards, Alt and Latham, are the two prospects some teams may want over Mims. But, they may be solely based on playing time. The trend for offensive linemen at UGA is that you have to develop and grind out the work on the bench before you have a shot at the starting role, which has worked out for Jones and Andrew Thomas.
Mims' time to shine is this year, and with his athleticism, size, and meanness on the field, he could even be one of the first tackles taken off the board in the 2024 NFL Draft.
