Like many other teams in the NFL, the Pittsburgh Steelers are one of the homes of former Georgia Bulldogs. In the previous two seasons, the Steelers have selected three offensive weapons from UGA, like George Pickens, Broderick Jones, and Darnell Washington. Recently, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin joined the Rich Eisen Show to discuss his big plans for Washington this season.

After Eisen and Tomlin finished discussing Pickens and how Tomlin tells him to "do the routine things routinely," and even though he can make "freakish" plays, he "wants him to become comfortable with drudgery," and "see him make the routine plays all the time," they began discussing another "freaky talent from Georgia" in Darnell Washington. Tomlin was asked by Eisen what his "vision was for his rookie season," and Tomlin had this to say.

"I just really love the fact that he embraces the blocking component of the position. When we went down to Athens, they said his personalized license plate was 'sixth offensive lineman,' and just a guy that embraces that component of the job in today's game is exciting. He's got the physical attributes to boot. He's been really good during team development, so I'm excited about what he can bring at the point of attack in the run game - you need guys that look like 4/3 ends to block 4/3 ends, he looks like some of these animals that play 4/3 ends. He's a big guy. Today's 250 lb tight end oftentimes struggles to block the 4/3 end so you better have somebody that looks like that. He physically looks like that. He has the appetite and attitude for it, so I'm looking forward to him being a big-time help to us. Really, he's been better in that passing game through this process maybe than we anticipated which is also a plus. "

The Steelers offense is looking to take another step forward this season under year two quarterback Kenny Pickett. Washington is still battling for the TE1 spot on the Steelers roster but has shown lots of potential through fall camp and preseason. These positive words could see Washington playing meaningful time in his rookie season, just like Pickens last season.
