Spring Needs: What Georgia Looks To Find Out About Their Quarterbacks
As February comes to a close, spring football nears ever so closely, and with it comes the impending position battles across the roster of the two-time defending champion Georgia Bulldogs. With 12 players from 2022's national title team in Indianapolis this week for the 2023 NFL Combine, it's clear there are some pretty big shoes to fill this season, most notably the quarterback position.
Stetson Bennett started 32 consecutive games at quarterback for the University of Georgia, spanning his fourth, fifth, and sixth seasons in college football. Now, Georgia looks to a room with zero career starts, but inarguable talent.
Carson Beck
Beck is the "leader in the clubhouse" so to speak after displaying through a 35-throw sample size in 2022 that the 6'4, 225-pound signal-caller has plenty of promise. He completed 74.3% of his passes, operated within the offense, and displayed the type of arm talent that had George Pickens demanding he throws at the future Pittsburgh Steeler's pro day in Athens a year ago.
Beck has been in the position to take over the reins of this offense for some time now. A member of the 2020 signing class, Beck has waited his turn as the backup in a system that he's comfortable in... a system that is not subject to change despite the coordinator turnover from Monken to Mike Bobo, according to sources. Kirby Smart made Travon Walker wait behind Malik Herring. He made Jalen Carter wait behind Devonte Wyatt and Julian Rochester.
Carson Beck has done his waiting. It'll be his job to lose this spring and fall, with a head start to boot.
Brock Vandagriff
Ask Las Vegas, Brock Vandagriff has the exact same odds to win the 2023 Heisman Trophy (+4000) as Carson Beck does. There's more than reason to be excited about the potential the 6'3, 220-pound dual-threat quarterback possesses. He, more than any of the three quarterbacks in supposed contention for the quarterback position, has the ability to make plays with his legs. Vandagriff has just two career pass attempts and has experienced spring games with reserve offensive linemen for several seasons now. This spring will be the first true look at him on a level playing field.
Gunner Stockton
Stockton received praise in the lead-up to the national championship due to his performances on the scout team. The then-freshman quarterback asked for his non-contact jersey to be removed so he could give the defense a true and accurate representation of Max Duggan's abilities on the scout team. It's that type of physicality and attitude that Stockton plays the quarterback position with. He's the hybrid of Vandagriff's raw athleticism and Beck's polished passing in a 6'1, 220-pound frame. He's a compact competitor. The kind that will make any quarterback competition interesting because he's not afraid to make any throw.
