Could Brock Bowers Go Down as the GOAT?

Georgia found a prized possession at the tight end position in Brock Bowers, and with 2023 likely being his last college season, could he go down as the greatest of all time?

Georgia's football program over the last couple of years has produced some of the greatest storylines, even outside of winning back-to-back national titles. Perhaps one of the greatest underdog stories in sports history in the form of Stetson Bennett, one of the greatest defenses of all time with an entire depth chart in the NFL, and right now, they have one of the greatest players at a position in the sport's history in Brock Bowers. Which now begs the always-burning question of: Is said player the greatest of all time?

The game of football has evolved quite a bit over the last 15 years, and one of the biggest changes in the game has been the shift in the usage of tight ends. Teams at all levels of the sport are no longer gunning after the big body end-of-line forces but more so the modern-day build of a tight end. What is a modern-day tight end you might ask? Well, look no further than Georgia's tight end Brock Bowers.

Since the day he started his first collegiate football game as a true freshman against Clemson in 2021, Bowers has been a focal point of the Bulldogs' offense. Get him in the ball in any way, shape, or form, and let him go to work. Whether it's in the screen game, a simple post route, or even an end-around handoff, Georgia does whatever they can to make sure Bowers gets his touches every single game. But not every tight end can be used the same way that Georgia uses Bowers, in fact, there probably isn't another tight end that gets utilized the way that Bowers does at the college level.

A player of that size matched up with getaway speed in the open field is not easy to find at the tight end position. But it's not just the measurables that make Bowers great, he has the stats to back it up even after just two seasons.

Bowers has even littered himself all over the Georgia history books with one more season still remaining before he is draft eligible. He is currently averaging 60 receptions per season and if he were to replicate that in 2023, he would have the third most career receptions in Georgia history. Last year he had the second most receptions in a single season in program history with 63. He is also just 10 touchdown receptions away from tying the all-time career program record.

So clearly, Bowers will go down as one of the greatest Bulldogs of all time, but what about from a national standpoint? College football has seen some incredible talents at tight end recently. Kyle Pitts from Florida is one of the more recent examples, and he became the highest-drafted tight end in NFL history when the Atlanta Falcons selected him with the fourth overall pick. Many expect Bowers to be the first tight end off the board in next year's draft class, assuming he does in fact declare early.

Bowers already has better college stats than Pitts did in three years at Florida, and it has already been shown that the Georgia tight end is accomplishing things that no other college tight end has been able to do. The last piece to the puzzle might just be a respectable finish in the Heisman voting at the end of the season, and with Georgia knowing they probably only have one more season with Bowers in the offense, they might just go full nuclear with him this year.

No player has ever won the John Mackey Award twice either, but if anyone could do it, it's Bowers. He already has one to his name along with a first-team All-American award, so now all that is left is to wait and see how special of a season the Napa native has in 2023.
