Darnell Washington's Combine Performance Makes Us Wonder About Brock Bowers
Another year and another week in which Georgia players showed out at the NFL combine event. Several Bulldogs put on stellar performances during their workouts in Indianapolis this weekend, and as a result, their draft stocks are on an upward trend.
One player that seemingly took over the combine was tight end Darnell Washington. The former Bulldog's ridiculous size and skill set have always been well-recognized, but after seeing him clock in a 4.64 in the 40-yard event and a 4.08 for the 20-yard shuttle, it has people talking.
Now that Washington has completed his weekend at the combine and his draft stock continues to rise as a result, it raises the question of just how good current Georgia tight end Brock Bowers will test when he declares for the NFL draft.
Bowers surged into college football stardom during his true freshman season in 2021 as he recorded 882 receiving yards and 14 total touchdowns. The rising junior continues to reset records at the position and NFL organizations are anxiously waiting for Bowers to officially start his professional career. Unfortunately for them but fortunate for Georgia fans, they will have to wait another season before Bowers is even eligible for the draft.
Georgia has done anything and everything they can to make sure Bowers gets his fair share of touches on offense. Whether it's through a simple pitch and catch through the screen game or even handing him the ball off behind the line of scrimmage, Bowers' unique skill set allows the Bulldogs to use him in a variety of ways.
He has shown the ability to beat defenders down the sideline even if they have an angle on him and he fights through contact to pick up yards after the catch. So now that the people have seen what Washington was able to do at the NFL combine event, how good will Bowers be when his time rolls around? The Bulldogs have the propensity to show off their skillsets when they matter most, and there might not be a more eye-popping skillset than the one Bowers possesses.
Offensive coordinator Todd Monken mentioned in previous media availabilities that Georgia's GPS tracking metrics on Bowers were what ultimately led the former Georgia coordinator to establish yards after the touch opportunities for the tight end — plays designed to take advantage of Bowers' elite top-end speed.
It's expected that Bowers will test off the charts when his time does come, and with Washington trending into the first round, it brings up the question of how high Bowers will go in the draft. And if the anticipation for Bowers' combine performance could have gotten any higher, Washington certainly helped raise the bar a good bit.
