What to Watch for at Wide Receiver during G Day

Georgia is loaded down at wide receiver this season, so what can fans expect from them at G Day this year?

This coming weekend at G Day, we will be getting our first look at the squad Georgia will be rolling with in 2023.  There are several positions that are worth keeping tabs on throughout the scrimmage starting with the quarterback room and seeing how the Bulldogs are looking under center after a full spring. Another intriguing position to watch this weekend though is the wide receiver group.

Georgia is arguably the deepest they have ever been at wide receiver under head coach Kirby Smart. They return several key contributors from a season ago and brought in Rara Thomas and Dominic Lovett from the transfer portal. During last year's spring scrimmage, Georgia was a very pass-heavy offense and gave their quarterbacks a lot of reps. With a quarterback battle underway, it can be expected that they will be doing the same this year which is good news for the wide receivers.

Not only did Georgia throw the ball a lot last year, but they also gave each receiver a good amount of targets. The Bulldogs had 11 players with five or more targets during last year's scrimmage which means there will be a lot of opportunity for anyone that sets foot on the field. And with how deep the depth chart is, it is expected that there will be a good amount of rotating on Saturday.

Saturday will also be a great chance to see what the Bulldogs brought in at wide receiver in the 2023 recruiting class. Oscar Delp led the team in receptions and targets during last year's scrimmage as a true freshman. Tyler Williams, Yazeed Haynes, and Anthony Evans have all been working with the team this spring, and fans could get a great look at what they all bring to the roster. Saturday could also provide a glimpse of which of the freshman could turn into first-year contributors on offense.

The last thing to really take note of on Saturday at wide receiver is the X spot. Guys have been battling it out this spring at that spot with the loss of Adonai Mitchell during the offseason. Rara Thomas and Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint appear to be the two front runners at the moment, and G Day will be a great chance for both guys to really solidify themselves and prove that the Bulldogs have nothing to worry about when it comes to what they have on the outside at receiver.
