Mike Matthews Commits to Tennessee Football

Josh Heupel and his staff are ecstatic after picking up one of the nation’s best wide receivers.

Mike Matthews, a Lilburn, Ga. native, has announced his college plans. The 5-star wide receiver is headed to Knoxville, TN to join the Tennessee Volunteer football program. 

As the shape of college offenses become tailored towards the “air raid” style, Matthews kept this in mind with his recruitment. Tennessee is a pass-heavy offense, as we saw in their game against Alabama when Jaylin Hyatt took over. 

Clemson, USC, and Georgia were also in the mix for the coveted athlete. Although Georgia missed out on this “can’t miss” athlete that's subject to playing wide receiver on the college level, among Georgia's 24 commits they have three receivers in Nitro Tuggle, Sacovie White, and Ny Carr.

Kirby Smart spoke about how the recruiting calendar has changed in college football, vaulting up that e timelines to the middle of the summer as opposed to closer to the season and closer to early national signing day. Smart said at SEC Media Days that it's "placed a bigger emphasis on summer recruiting and official visits."
