Stetson Bennett Will Break a Georgia Football Trend on Draft Night
The name "Stetson Bennett" has become legendary in the last two college football seasons. After bringing Georgia its first national title in 41 years, "The Mailman" followed up his heroic 2021 season with an undefeated regular season that earned him a trip to New York. Now, Bennett has turned his attention to making history for Georgia in the NFL Draft.
Since Matthew Stafford was selected first overall in 2009, Georgia quarterbacks haven't been a hot commodity in the NFL. Since then, just two Bulldogs quarterbacks have been selected with neither of them going higher than round five.
Enter Stetson Bennett, a Heisman finalist who is coming off a second straight National Championship victory and an incredible pro day. With his recent successes, it seems more and more likely that Bennett will likely become the highest-drafted quarterback of the Kirby Smart era and the highest-drafted quarterback for the team since 2009.
If his combine was not enough for you to believe that he is a legitimate NFL prospect, perhaps some of the experts' opinions are well. Mel Kiper stated after Bennett had completed the combine workouts that he was very impressed with how he performed and predicted the Georgia quarterback to be taken up somewhere near the fourth round.
“Since he didn’t play in an All-Star game after his season ended, this was the first time NFL teams have gotten to see him up close. He’s in the Round 4 range on my board, and I think he’ll have a long NFL career.”
-Mel Kiper
A fourth-round selection would make Bennett the fourth-highest Georgia quarterback of the seven-round draft era began in 1997.
