Second College Football Playoff Rankings Predictions
Following last Tuesday's initial installment o the College Football Playoff rankings, the selection committee will be back tonight to introduce the second College Football Playoff rankings for the 2023 season. Before we turn our televisions over to ESPN at 7 p.m. tonight to watch the show, Dawgs Daily is here with our predictions for the second week's rankings.
The College Football Playoff matches the No. 1 ranked team vs. No. 4, and No. 2 vs. No. 3 in semifinal games that rotate annually among six bowl games – the Goodyear Cotton Bowl, Vrbo Fiesta Bowl, Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, Capital One Orange Bowl, Allstate Sugar Bowl and Rose Bowl Game presented by Prudential. This season's Playoff Semifinals will take place Monday, January 1, 2024, at the Rose Bowl Game presented by Prudential and Allstate Sugar Bowl. The College Football Playoff National Championship will be on Monday, January 8, 2024, at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas.
1. Ohio State - The Buckeyes rolled out as the committees top team in the initial rankings. Having a solid resume to back up their ranking with wins over a ranked Notre Dame and Penn State, Ryan Day has led his team to an undefeated position this point through the season. Although consistency isn't what we should expect from the committee, this early on I wouldn't expect much to change.
2. Georgia - The bulldogs have been the most impressive team in college football for the past two season, but hasn't't looked like that this year. Close victories over Auburn and South Carolina stand out when looking at their resume, but two ranked wins over Kentucky and Missouri should be what comes to focal point. Georgia didn't handle Missouri the way they did Kentucky though, and because of that I think the committee holds them at two with a big test in ole Miss this weekend.
3. Michigan - Sure, plenty of Michigan's dirty laundry has been aired out recently with the news regarding sign stealing, but nonetheless you still have to line up and play football. The Wolverines have the No. 1 offense and defense in the country, and have looked like the most dominant team when glancing at their margin of victory. Michigan doesn't have their statement win though, and will remain in their third spot. They play their first ranked opponent of the season in Penn State this weekend which will be a tough test.
4. Florida State - the ACC's top school has seen their perfect season almost end a few times this season, like against Clemson. Despite the adversity, the Seminoles have overcome it and have two ranked wins in the form of LSU and Duke. They fended off Pitt this past weekend, 24-67, and will likely hold their spot as well.
