The Forgotten Rivalry of Georgia and Ole Miss

The Georgia Bulldogs and Ole Miss Rebels will play each other for the first time in over seven years. But it didn't used to always be this way...

For the first time in more than 10 seasons, the Georgia Bulldogs and Ole Miss Rebels will battle "Between the Hedges" in what has the potential to be the Bulldogs' biggest game of the 2023 regular season. But while the stakes of Saturday's matchup are extremely high, the recent history between these two teams remains fairly small.

Despite sharing a conference, the two teams have played just three times in the past 15 seasons with the last matchup being all the way back in 2016 when a Hugh Freeze-led Rebels team crushed the Bulldogs by a score of 45-14 in Oxford. But the lack of contests between the Bulldogs and Rebels is relatively new as far as the history of this rivalry goes.

In fact, from 1966-2002 the two teams played annually, often alternating home and home games. In that time the Bulldogs dominated the series, winning 27 of the 37 games. Including a 12-game win streak from 1976-1988. However, since 2002, both teams have played a grand total of just six times.

There is little to no explanation as to why these two teams no longer meet annually. One would assume that the two teams playing in separate divisions would have something to do with the lack of scheduling. However, divisions in the SEC were first conceived when the conference expanded back in 1992. Meaning that the Dawgs and Rebels would remain playing annually for nearly 10 more seasons, despite being placed in different divisions.

While it is unclear why Georgia and Ole Miss no longer face off annually, it remains even more unclear when they will meet again. Saturday's high-stakes matchup almost certainly has the ability to rekindle this SEC rivalry.
